Why Removing the Negative is More Effective at Times Than Just Being Positive

What if you don’t necessarily need to be more positive, you just need to eliminate some of the negative? Hear me out…I’m definitely on board with focusing on being positive, and I teach about your thoughts creating your reality and the importance of raising your vibration. BUT this doesn’t mean taking these wild leaps like you see a lot online or get in advice, like “Oh, just be positive” or affirmations that are over the top positive and also completely unbelievable when you’re truly feeling some shitty negative feelings.
Getting out of your funk, not dwelling on things, not beating yourself up…all very important. But in those moments, does it feel more helpful to think a few positive affirmations, OR to take a few seconds to explore the negative thoughts, see what they’re showing you, and process and release them?
If you choose positive affirmations, that’s fine, if that works for you, absolutely do it! But the trick for this to really work is to just go to the next best thought. I can’t emphasize this enough – it must be believable and you must be able to visualize and feel it as if it’s real for it to work. And because this only slightly better thought is slightly less negative, you WILL start to feel better.
AND, if you chose the alternative route, to explore the negative feelings or thoughts and release them, this is an amazing choice because you’re not trying to put a bandaid on the situation, which simply covers the negative that is still there and probably needs to be dealt with. Our feelings and funks are messengers, showing us something that needs some attention, and often amazing opportunities to grow in some area we’ve probably needed to grow in for a while. They can also be an opportunity to practice something we’ve been learning or working on lately.
Whatever it is, allowing yourself to feel what you’re feeling without trying to just mask it and ignore it is always going to be a better choice in the long run, so the issue doesn’t just pop back up later, you grow, AND it’s a better use of your time and energy and will get you back to feeling more positive quicker than repeating a statement you don’t really feel or believe.
