Burnout: A Dangerous, but Accepted and Expected Norm

Updated: May 8, 2024

Burnout, Coaching, Reiki

Feeling burnt out has become an accepted and expected norm, and there seems to be an almost competitive nature to it – people comparing who’s more burnt out than whom.  If I had a nickel for every time someone responded to “how are you” with “omg SO busy”...  Unfortunately, the hustle culture we live in tells us we must constantly be going, doing, and being to have any sense of worth or value.  That if we can’t juggle all the things there’s something wrong with us.  That we always have to strive for the next thing, move up the ladder, be perfect, and be everything to everyone.  This is not sustainable. Burnout is a dangerous and common issue - let's explore it a bit more.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

When we reach a state of burnout, our mind and body are telling us “ENOUGH”!  It’s begging us to stop.  But before this happens, there have been plenty of gentle warnings and requests to slow down and of the dangerous path we’re on.  After ignoring the nudges long enough, our mind and/or body will get our attention, often in one or many of the following ways:

  • Insomnia or sleep issues

  • Irritability

  • Fatigue

  • Emotional imbalances

  • Brain fog

  • Health issues

  • Lack of motivation and fulfillment

  • Numbing out

  • A feeling of running on fumes

Causes of Burnout

Besides the constant go go go, some other causes of burnout include unconscious patterns and wiring that cause us to push beyond our limits.  Things like:

  • Perfectionism

  • Lack of boundaries

  • People pleasing

  • Refusing to delegate or ask for help

  • Lack of self-care

  • Poor communication skills

  • Lack of purpose or direction

  • Career pressure

  • Lack of confidence

It doesn’t have to and shouldn’t be this way.

Learning to identify the internal patterns causing you to push to the point of burnout is the first step in avoiding or eliminating it.  Understanding why you feel the need to strive for perfection, to equate your output with your value, to believe that you’re not allowed to slow down, can be incredibly illuminating and a very important step in changing the behaviors.

I can help you break the cycle, release the toxic effects of stress on your body, restore balance, and feel more grounded, fulfilled, and at ease. Burnout is a dangerous but accepted and expected norm - but you have the ability to stop the cycle!
